Synopsis

In the late 19th century, during the British colonial rule of India, the villagers of Champaner are struggling under a heavy land tax, known as 'Lagaan'. When they are unable to pay due to drought, a cocky British officer, Captain Andrew Russell, offers them a daunting challenge: defeat his team in a game of cricket, a sport unknown to the villagers, and their taxes will be waived for three years. If they lose, they will have to pay three times the Lagaan. Led by the determined Bhuvan, the villagers reluctantly accept the impossible wager. With the help of Elizabeth Russell, Captain Russell's compassionate sister, who secretly teaches them the rules of cricket, Bhuvan and his ragtag team embark on a journey of learning, unity, and self-belief.
